If you have arrived at this blog, you may know that We Make Good is all about promoting Irish social enterprise made products. We believe social enterprises create more equal societies and they are a way of doing business that we need more of. All our products help people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Having that first job is a really significant driver in giving people the resources and confidence to improve their life.

This month we are doing something different. It's our first time to promote a social enterprise from outside of Ireland. Let us introduce you to this amazing initiative and we think you’ll understand why. SilaiWali is a social enterprise that helps women who have fled Taliban rule in Afghanistan. Based in New Delhi, this social business assists refugees who have often left their homeland with only the possessions that can be carried with them. Like all the Irish social enterprises we support, this initiative is all about offering hope, and it's doing so in an environment where this can be in short supply. Many Afghan women refugees find getting employment in India difficult as they arrive speaking neither Hindi or English. SilaiWali provides a sufficient income for the women to support their families, while they learn the local language and establish themselves in a community. Most women are the sole earner for their household. As the organisation explains: ‘When mothers are supported, children and communities thrive. Here Afghan refugee mothers have found support, hope, and financial stability through handcrafting dolls’.

SilaiWali also uses reclaimed materials in all its products, turning what could be waste, of both unused materials, and people’s talents, into beautiful products that symbolise hope. This message extends outside the sewing workshops to all those who own one of these beautiful dolls. As individuals most of us can’t affect the news headlines, we can however, through thoughtful actions, impact on the lives of people living in those stories.

Each of these dolls supports this amazing enterprise, helping it to grow. We Make Good will donate €10.00 from the sale of each doll to the Irish Refugee Council in Ireland, who are working with refugees from Afghanistan to support integration and family reunification. These dolls are a lovely way to support the women behind the headlines. We hope you like them as much as we do.

You can buy the beautiful range of dolls here.
